Background of the Study
Poor waste disposal practices have long been recognized as a significant factor in the deterioration of public health, particularly in urban areas with high population density. Kano State, Nigeria's most populous northern state, faces challenges related to waste management due to rapid urbanization, inadequate waste collection systems, and limited public awareness of the health risks associated with improper waste disposal (Musa & Abubakar, 2023). Inadequate waste disposal leads to the accumulation of garbage in public spaces, which serves as a breeding ground for disease-causing organisms such as bacteria, viruses, and vectors like mosquitoes (Salihu et al., 2024).
The improper disposal of solid waste, such as plastics, organic waste, and hazardous materials, contributes to the contamination of water sources, food supplies, and the environment (Oluwaseun & Ibrahim, 2025). In Kano State, improper waste disposal is linked to an increased incidence of waterborne diseases, respiratory infections, and vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue fever (Rauf & Dikko, 2023). Additionally, the lack of waste management infrastructure in rural and peri-urban areas exacerbates the problem, as residents often resort to burning waste or dumping it in open fields or water bodies.
The impact of poor waste disposal practices on public health in Kano State is a critical area of concern that requires urgent attention. Understanding how improper waste management contributes to the spread of diseases will help inform policies and strategies aimed at improving waste disposal systems and public health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing awareness of the importance of proper waste management, poor waste disposal practices persist in Kano State, leading to negative health outcomes for residents. The lack of efficient waste management systems and public education on waste disposal poses a threat to public health, with diseases linked to poor sanitation continuing to affect the population. There is a need to investigate the impact of poor waste disposal practices on public health in Kano State to develop effective solutions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of poor waste disposal practices on public health in urban and rural areas of Kano State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and health outcome assessments. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and challenges in measuring the long-term impact of waste management interventions.
